The 6-Days Machame Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and adventurous trekking paths, offering climbers a rewarding challenge with spectacular landscapes. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” it features steep ascents, diverse terrain, and incredible views of forests, moorlands, and alpine deserts. This route allows for proper acclimatization, increasing the chances of successfully reaching the summit. Along the way, trekkers experience dramatic volcanic formations, glaciers, and panoramic vistas while staying in mountain huts that provide comfort and rest after each day’s trek.
This route culminates at Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, where climbers witness unforgettable sunrise views over the Tanzanian landscape. With professional guides, cultural encounters with local Chagga communities, and challenging yet manageable daily hikes, the Machame Route offers a perfect combination of adventure, natural beauty, and lasting memories.
The drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame, located on the lower slopes of the mountain.
After leaving the park gate, the trail winds through dense rain forest as it climbs along a ridge. The lower sections can be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended. The route continues steadily until reaching Machame Camp.
After breakfast, we leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the little valley, walking along a steep rocky ridge covered with heather until the ridge ends. The route then turns west onto a river gorge. Time for rest, dinner, and overnight at the Shira campsite.
From the Shira Plateau, we continue east up a ridge, passing the junction toward the peak of Kibo. The route then turns southeast toward the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” Shortly after the tower, we reach the second junction leading to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000 ft. From here, we descend to Barranco Hut at 13,000 ft, where we rest, enjoy dinner, and stay overnight. Although the day ends at the same elevation as it began, this stage is crucial for acclimatization and helps prepare the body for summit day.
After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge, passing the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley campsite. We then leave Karanga and reach the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail before continuing up to Barafu Hut. At this point, the South Circuit is completed, offering views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for summit day, with the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo visible from this position.
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 a.m.), we continue our ascent to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Heading in a northwesterly direction, the trail climbs through heavy scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the trek.
At Stella Point (18,600 ft), there is a short rest and, weather permitting, a spectacular sunrise. From here, snow may be encountered during the final one-hour ascent to the summit. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, you stand at the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and on the African continent. Faster hikers may witness the sunrise directly from the summit.
From the summit, we descend straight down to Mweka Hut, stopping at Barafu for lunch. Gaiters and trekking poles are recommended for the loose gravel on the descent. Mweka Camp lies in the upper forest, where mist or rain is common in the late afternoon. In the evening, we enjoy our final dinner on the mountain before a well-earned rest.
After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, conditions can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are helpful. Shorts and t-shirts are usually sufficient, but keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy.
From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village, where a vehicle will meet you and drive you back to your hotel in Moshi.
